Lab Integrated Data
Free and open-source software for modern biology
LabID helps research teams manage lab inventories, capture research data and metadata, and document experiments in shareable electronic notes within one open, customizable and extensible platform.
Manage your lab inventory
Track and share your lab consumables, equipment and storage locations. Start immediately by using the provided entity models (antibody, plasmid, oligo, and more) or create new specialised types tailored to your needs. Keep inventory items private using strict permissions, or share them between groups and collaborators.
Write your lab notebook
Document your research in an electronic lab notebook powered by a user-friendly text editor. Reference specific lab supplies and biological entities within your notes. Keep your notes private, or share them with individual collaborators and groups.
Manage your datasets
Register raw and derived datasets. Track acquisition and transformation metadata with domain-specific assay models. Build complete lineages by associating datasets to originating samples and specimens.
Manage your workflows
Register, version, and share workflows from Git, WorkflowHub, or Galaxy. Track workflow runs, datasets, and provenance metadata to ensure reproducibility and collaborative analysis history.

Biobanking Manage locations of your valuable items and track their shipments
Manage locations of your valuable items and track their shipments
Track exact storage locations for samples, specimens or any lab inventory item in custom storage places with unlimited nesting (e.g. Freezer > Drawers > Rack > Plate…). Track shipments of your biobank items to collaborators or customers.
Sample Manage your samples and reflect your experimental design (e.g. parent-child relationships) in a sample lineage graph (unlimited steps), supporting sample branching and merging. Specimen Manage all your living specimen collections (mice, flies, patients, cell lines...) that are the origin of your samples. Storage Tracking Track exact storage locations in custom storage places with unlimited nesting and manage shipments to collaborators or customers. Shipment Tracking Manage shipments of your biobank items to collaborators or customers. Electronic Lab Notebook Word-like experiments with tables and pictures
Word-like experiments with tables and pictures
Write notes in Word-like experiments that can include tables and pictures. Link to protocols, samples, and inventory items consumed in the experiment. Easily share your experiments with colleagues and organise them into projects.
Office Editor Write your notes using a rich word-like editor with tables, images, and formatting. Digital timestamping RFC 3161 compliant digital timestamping of your ELN protects your discoveries (intellectual property). Protocol Easily create, version, and share well-formatted protocols with embedded tables and pictures. Copying and pasting from existing Word documents also works. Create new experiment in your ELN using protocols as templates. Attachments Attach files and documents to your experiments for complete documentation. Comments Collaborate with colleagues through inline comments and discussions. LibreOffice Compatibility Directly modify any attached office document in the browser. No need to download. No lock-in Export your data in multiple formats

Assay Management
Specialised Assay Models Built-in support for common laboratory assays
Built-in support for common laboratory assays
Built-in support for common laboratory assays including sequencing, light microscopy, electron microscopy, and more. Each assay type has specialized fields and workflows.
Sequencing Store & share raw and derived datasets. Connect raw data (e.g. FastQ files) to the assays (run parameters, instruments) and samples used to acquire them. Track datasets lineage and connect final results to raw data. Light Microscopy Out-of-the-box support for image data from light and fluorescence microscopy assays, including plate-based screens; describe key metadata for the XYZCT dimensions (unlimited channel number). Electron Microscopy Out-of-the-box support for room temperature and cryo-electron microscopy, including TEM, vEM, and tomography setups. Specific sample types allow flexible descriptions of grid preparation, vitrification, and FIB milling. Generic Assay Model Store singular assays with a customisable generic model and personalized annotations.
Store singular assays with a customisable generic model and personalized annotations.
Use our generic assay model to store singular assays for which no better specialized model has been developed yet. Use your own personalized assay types as categories, and your own annotations to track key metadata.

CLI Develop automated data and metadata ingestion processes (_e.g._ from core facilities) using the command-line interface (CLI) API Create your own data registration client by consuming the API. Dataset Copy Management Track, archive, and share your data copies
Track, archive, and share your data copies
Easily track and manage copies of your data stored on different storage volumes (local, S3, archives…) to optimize your costs and reduce CO2 emissions.
Archive & Restore Send data to cold storage to save on storage costs and restore it to its original location as and when required. Write your own plugin to integrate archiving and restoration operations with your infrastructure. Share via S3 Share or publish a copy of your data with internal and external collaborators easily by sending it to an S3 bucket in just a few clicks. Galaxy Integration Send dataset collections to Galaxy in a few clicks, run your favourite Galaxy workflows, and store analysed data back in LabID. Workflows Track data provenance with integrated workflow management.
Track data provenance with integrated workflow management.
Import workflows from Git or define them from scratch using the LabID user interface. Track the full provenance of your analysed data by connecting it to the exact versions of workflows and computation parameters used through WorkflowRun.
Galaxy Integration Import Galaxy Workflows and Workflow Invocations into LabID to track full provenance of analysed data down to samples and your ELN notes. WorkflowHub Import workflows from WorkflowHub, publish your own workflows to WorkflowHub. RO-Crate Publish your workflows to WorkflowHub and export Workflow Runs as interoperable RO-Crate objects.Getting Started

Latest News
Registration opened for the next LabID training at EMBL Heidelberg
The next in-person training (1.5 day) will take place at EMBL Heidelberg on September 28-29, 2026.
Vue 3 & Django Upgrade
This release upgrades the UI from Vue 2 to Vue 3 and the server from Django 3.2 to Django 5.2 LTS. On the UI side, users get improved responsiveness, multi-instance Galaxy support, and better record selection with drag-to-select. The CLI gains a dedicated `register wfrun_crate` command for workflow runs coming as RO-Crate, while the original `register wfrun` has a new `--search-strategy-table` option. The documentation also features new trainings describing workflow runs registration via the UI and the CLI.
